What are hydroponics
Hydroponics are when plants are grown directly in water. There are many ways to make a hydroponic system. In 2023, a lot of people when thinking hydroponics imagine a complex system of PVC like pipes jumbled together. These are not the only system type. There are systems that are towers where water is pulled up and then drips to each plant. Another system is a basin that has the plant growing directly in the water.Hydroponics can be customized to each individuals need, wants and curiosities. For these specific systems, we can help.
Who We Are
Founder:
Skylah Miller, B.S
Soilless was created over roughly a year by our founder Skylah Miller. She had grown up gardening her whole life, and she invested in hydroponics when Miracle-Gro had just released one of their first hydroponic systems. It all started just as one hobby and just another thing to explore. She slowly started documenting and comparing it to the plants in her greenhouse; the differences in growth rate, over yield, etc.
Almost a year later she was in an environmental science class and the professor asked her to stay after her class to talk about possible research opportunities due to Skylah's interest in the relationship between water and plants. After doing so, Skylah agreed to do research with the professor and spent a whole semester researching ideas that no one has done before. Thus came up with her first true experiment with hydroponics; Studying the Salt Tolerance of Midori Giant Soybeans Grown Under Hydroponic Conditions. She set up the systems in December 2021 and began her journey into the hydroponic world. She researched the systems all year round (spring semester 2022, summer 2022, fall semester 2022, and spring semester 2023) up until she graduated (May 2023). Throughout her findings, she has done several projects, adjusted salinities, adjusted the systems, etc. As she researched, she realized several things after talking to many people. Hydroponics had a bad rep. A lot of people were under the impression that hydroponics was too difficult to do and insanely expensive. She wanted to make a change about this stigma. That change begins with us, Soilless.
